68th Annual Midwest Association for Latin American Studies (MALAS)

Two events are open to the public. 

First, our keynote speaker, Ambassador Vicki Huddleston, will give a talk, The Ghost of Fidel Castro: America’s Failed Cuba Policy.  She is the author of Our Woman in Havana: A Diplomat's Chronicle of America's Long Struggle with Castro's Cuba.  The talk will take place in Blumberg Auditorium on Thursday, November 15 at 7 p.m.

Second, on Friday, November 16 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., also in Blumberg Auditorium, there will be a roundtable discussion, Human Rights Crisis at the Border: Challenges and Responses:

                             Linda Rivas, Attorney, Las Américas Immigrant Advocacy Center, El Paso

                        Johanna Bencomo, community organizer, CAFÉ, Las Cruces

                        Emiliano Díaz, El Colegio de la Frontera Norte, Ciudad Juárez

                        Neil Harvey, New Mexico State University, Las Cruces

                        Cristina Goletti, UTEP

Many UTEP faculty and students will present their work on panels on Friday afternoon from 1 to 4:30 and Saturday morning from 9:00 to 12:45

  • The suggested contribution for attending unlimited panels is $20 for faculty and professionals, and $10 for students
  • However, contributions are voluntary
