During the week of Sept. 1-8, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel will be in residence at UTEP. While there, she will offer three 90-minute writing workshops on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 3-5 from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. During these workshops, Paula and participants will write a short play and exercises together, reading out loud those responses from willing writers. They will discuss different ways to structure time: the linear sense of time, time in a circle (where the beginning and the end are the same) and time in a pattern, and play with narrative, plot and the visual of performance. Students are invited to participate in as many of these workshops as they choose.
The week will culminate in an event called a “bake-off” in which writers create and design a short play. Saturday evening, Sept. 7 at 5 p.m. there will be a performance of the short plays at the Wise Theatre on the UTEP campus.
There are no critiques in these workshops; rather all writing prompts are seen as gifts to all in the room.
No one needs to have knowledge of theatre or writing. Our experience is that these workshops, however, become addictive in terms of exploring one’s theatrical voice. And there is the hope that, in the play worlds of our own making, we might bring a small sense of order to the disordered world.
